Mission and staff

The Centre for Prevention and Early Detection of Cancer focuses its research on the early detection of several types of cancer and more specifically on the implementation of cancer screening programmes.
During the mid-nineties, a regional cervical cancer screening programme was set up and results were evaluated.
Later on, the impact of melanoma on public health was studied, resulting in several publications.
Since 1991 breast cancer screening is the main topic of the centre. The centre participated in a multi-centre study that supported the governmental decision to implement the European Guidelines on Breast Cancer Screening in Belgium, and more specific in Flanders.
Since 2001, a standardized breast cancer screening programme based on these European Guidelines is running in Flanders. Our centre plays a key role in the organisation and the quality control within a specified geographical area.
